The first formal meeting of the Jaffa Highlanders was held at the home of Noble Dennis Ridenour on May 26. 1977. Noble Roy Cook. Jr. did a lot of ground work including getting permission from the Potentate. Present at the first meeting were Nobles James D. Angus, Roy E. Cook Jr., Wayne Fulmer, Edward Law, James Meadows, P.R. Daniel
Reese, Dennis Ridenour, and Gary Thompson.

All approved that the name of the unit should be the Jaffa Highlanders. It was also decided that the tartan should be Gordon’s. This tartan was chosen to honor Noble Gordan Bringham who was one of the original organizers of the Unit and was called by the Black Camel in a sudden and untimely manner.

Officers elected at the first meeting were: James V. Meadows, P.P., and Clan Chief: Dennis Ridenour, Pipe Major; Roy E. Cook, Jr., Secretary Treasurer: Daniel Reese, Drum Sergeant; and Gary Thompson. Quarter Master.

By-Laws of the Unit were presented to potentate Charles Ellis on August 8. 1977.  John R. Hamilton was engaged to instruct all the pipers, beginning with the practice chanter, and a year later getting the pipes. Mr. Hamilton advised us on the pipes and the uniform. The full uniform of the Gordon Highlanders of Scotland was chosen. We wear this uniform on ceremonial occasions to this day.

Noble Robert Emerly was elected First Assistant Clan Chief of the Mid-Atlantic Highlanders Association in 1986. He went on to become the first clan chief of that organization from Jaffa Temple.
The Unit continues to be active twenty-five years from its beginning. We are actively looking for new pipers and drummers. We will be glad to teach any Noble the craft of our trade.

The Jaffa Highlanders are called upon to play for many community events such as the March of Dimes, Walk for Pets, Veterans events, and fire and police organizations of all types. We also play at various school programs for all ages.
